Microsoft Research

The Data Nutrition Project has collaborated with Microsoft Research since 2021 on projects at the intersection of data transparency and responsible AI. In 2022, we worked with the Microsoft Research team to create a custom Dataset Nutrition Label for their Hippocorpus dataset, showcasing how a Dataset Nutrition Label and a collaborative process that involves subject matter experts supports transparent and useful dataset documentation.

Since 2023, we have also been working with Microsoft Research to co-develop and publish educational video animations designed to highlight inclusive methods for research, dataset creation, and privacy preservation. We created What Language Does AI Speak? with the ASL Citizen Dataset team, and we made Is a Dosa a Crepe? with the DOSA team. We are currently co-developing a new series of videos with Microsoft Research that focus on what AI is and how organizations with sensitive information, like community-based organizations (CBOs), can use their data with AI in responsible, privacy-protecting ways.

What Language Does AI Speak?
by the Data Nutrition Project | AAAI-24 Award Winner

Co-created between the Data Nutrition Project and the ASL Citizen Dataset team, this animation summarizes the team’s research on the limitations and gaps in AI ASL translation tools and offers recommendations for how to create more accurate, equitable, and useful translation tools by engaging with the ASL community.

Is a Dosa a Crepe? The Importance of Cultural Diversity in AI Training Data

Co-created between the Data Nutrition Project and the Microsoft Research DOSA team, this animation showcases the DOSA team’s research insights, including the lack of Indian cultural knowledge in AI training data and how to work with local populations to create high quality datasets.
